Cold Emailing Is the Art of Starting Conversations

September 12, 2026

Cold emailing is a beautiful form of art that everyone should know about. GTM (go to market) starts and lives with it.

Not because it books meetings. Because it teaches you how to start conversations with strangers.

GTM lives and dies on conversations.

Cold DM someone. Congratulate them on a launch. Reply to their post. Appreciate their work. Ask a thoughtful question. Build relationships.

The best GTM Engineers know how to create opportunities from conversations.

Here's how I approach prospects:

1. I looked for "why now" before writing anything

This is probably the most important part.

🌵 Most people build a list based on industry and job title. I started building lists based on moments.

  • Company hiring sales reps? They probably need pipeline.
  • Agency posting new case studies? They probably want more clients like that.
  • SaaS company raising money? They probably have growth pressure.
  • Founder posting about expansion? They probably need demand to catch up.

That "why now" made the email feel less random. The prospect did not feel like I scraped them from a database, even though obviously there was still data involved.

2. I did not ask for a meeting too early

This one helped a lot.

🌵 When someone has no idea who you are, asking for 30 minutes is a big ask. I got better replies when I asked for permission to send something useful instead.

  • "worth sending the idea?"
  • "should I send the breakdown?"
  • "want me to show you the angle?"

That small CTA got more people to reply because it did not feel like they were agreeing to a whole sales call just by responding.

The meeting came later, after there was a reason.

3. Follow-ups were not just bumps

🌵 I hate the "just bumping this" follow-up. It adds nothing.

My follow-ups were usually different angles around the same problem. The first email might be about sales reps needing pipeline. The second might be about testing new markets without hiring SDRs. The third might be about competitors already targeting the same accounts.

Same offer, different pain.

That worked way better than sending "any thoughts?" three times and hoping guilt would close the deal.
